2014 Queen’s Baton Relay

The Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay is Scotland’s heartfelt invitation to the athletes, people and communities of the Commonwealth to join together and celebrate sport, culture and unity at the XX Commonwealth Games. It aims to unite the Commonwealth through sport and connect and involve its cultures and citizens; especially young people. It will be an exciting, dramatic and be an inclusive physical and digital countdown to the games. It will showcase what Scotland and Glasgow has to offer to the world and champion the values, successes and spirit of the Commonwealth family.

The Queens Baton Relay will visit Dumfries & Galloway on Thursday 19th June 2014, the exact Thursday only two years after the iconic Olympic Torch passed through our region. It will travel from east to west across our region covering all four local areas with the exact town location announced in March 2014. By the time the baton reaches Scotland it will have passed through 69 Commonwealth Nations with these two pictures below giving an idea of its journey: -

The Queen's Baton is held by Indian steeple chase athlete Sudha Singh, at the iconic Taj Mahal, in Agra, India.

The Queen's Baton is transported by wooden canoe from Kavieng to Nusa island in Papua New Guinea

Dumfries & Galloway Council are now beginning the search for nearly 400 volunteer stewards in our region alone with approximately 100 required for the area of Stranraer. Volunteers will be required to attend a training date to be agreed in June and the majority of volunteers will be required for a 2-3 hour period on the day of the 19th June or slightly longer where celebratory activities have been organised on route.

Dumfries & Galloway Council will look to offer a small reward/souvenir for volunteers giving up their time however; due to the number of volunteers required across the day we cannot confirm what that will be at this time. However, what we can promise is that the majority of volunteers will be guaranteed a perfect position to see the baton, carrying the Queens message as it passes through our local towns. It will be carried by our very own local heroes from Dumfries & Galloway making its way to the opening ceremony in Glasgow on the 23rd July 2014. This is your chance to be part of one of the World’s Major Sporting Events.

Volunteers will require to be 18 years of age or over however, volunteers under the age of 18 can also be offered a stewarding role pairing up alongside stewards where there is a necessity for more than one steward.
