Volunteer Awareness and Recruitment Day 2017

Wigtownshire Health & Wellbeing Team  are pleased to announce that they will be holding a Volunteers awareness and recruitment day  in July 2017

The aim of the day to enable  members of the community to come along and find out what a community volunteer is all about ?
You will get the opportunity to hear from a range of community volunteers about their Journey ,why they became a volunteers , the skills  they came with and the new skills they have gained, their personal achievements and how their contribution has  supported the quality of lives of others in the community

There’s a huge range of volunteering opportunities available. Volunteers do all sorts of things, from befriending someone who is isolated to teaching a dance class.
Volunteering is also something anyone can do. People of all ages and ethnic and social backgrounds volunteer across Scotland  every year. Some volunteer full-time, others for a few hours a week or even just a one-off project.

Some organisations are looking for volunteers with certain skills, but most offer full training and are just looking for someone with enthusiasm. Whatever your skills are, whatever you enjoy doing, whatever spare time you have, there will be a voluntary opportunity to suit you.

Benefits of Volunteering

  • There is a wide body of research demonstrating the range of health and well being benefits that can come from volunteering.

  • 73% of formal volunteers state that personal enjoyment was a very important benefit of volunteering.

  • 74% of formal volunteers get satisfaction from seeing the results of their voluntary activity.

  • 69% of 50+ yr old respondents state that getting involved in volunteering has increased their social interaction with people from different age groups (Making the Connection 2, 2010)

  • 69% of young people said volunteering has increased their ability to get paid work and 66% said volunteering has increased their ability to get a place on a university or college course (Millennium Volunteers Survey 2012).

    Bosom Buddies Stranraer

We will have another morning get together of the Bosom Buddies Group next Tuesday (16th May - 11am ) at Brambles.  It would be great to see you all there.  We will do our best to limit the meeting to around one hour to avoid interfering with other commitments you all may have.

Following on from our last get together, we can further discuss our proposed sponsored walk (Moonwalk?) for local charity. St. John's Ambulance was mentioned as an organisation you were all keen to help.

    Also, we can touch on:-

    • premises for our meetings (we have a few ideas we can discuss)
    • cancer awareness training (offered by Alan Gow from Macmillan Cancer Support)
    • local services for cancer survivors/patients
    • current events with Move More and T.C.A.T. programme and
    • future activities

I will also see if I can get someone involved in local cancer services provision to come along and join us for a chat (I will keep you updated about that).

We can also enjoy coffee and a general chat.

If you have access to Facebook it would be helpful if you link with the new Wigtownshire Health and Social Care Integration Team Facebook page. I will post information about Bosom Buddies and other Move More/T.C.A.T. initiatives on there.  Angela will also continue to develop the existing Bosom Buddies pages.
