Stranraer are looking to develop a Community Singing Group for all , There is  "No Auditions " and everyone is welcome !


The group will meet every Tue 1.30pm -3pm at the Ryan centre Stranraer  , Commencing on Tue 20th  Feb . COME AND JOIN IN !!

Free Walk Taster planned at the Kiroughtree visitors Centre

Building Healthy Communities  and Macmillan Cancer  Move more programme have organised a free Taster Walk for  People effected by cancer and other Long Term Conditions , on Friday 2nd Feb 2018 , meeting at the car park  at the centre for 1pm, Kirroughtree  Centre provides a great setting for walks through the woods, The event is also open to Family  members .Carers and Friends  who are welcomed to attend




The walk which lasts for approximately an hour in length ,will be followed with a coffee or tea for those interested in the Kirroughtree centre


For those living in the stranraer area ,transport will be available ,and a meeting point at the Cancer Drop in Centre  located at the Galloway Hospital for 12.00 noon

Grounds for Better Health Project - Community Garden Gallway Hospital plans its spring development

As we leave winter behind and look forward to Spring ,its that time of year to start clearing and planning for the summer months for our gardens
Having identified four community garden groups, interested in developing their gardening skills and supporting the development and use of the community garden at the Galloway Hospital ,Early discussions with the  groups have identified the benefit  to collectively support one another and enhance the success of the Community garden development








The Gardens for Health project will be holding a development meeting on the 7th February at the locality offices at 1.30pm ,The aim of the meeting will be to  identify how the gardens can be developed and maintained and how the groups can work together to achieve its outcome ,we have also gained the support of the Community Action Team based at the Reuse  shop  to assist in the garden development and Jackie Rae and Paul Smith are delighted to be able to support those involved, we would welcome any other individuals or Groups interested to come along and get involved

Reuse Shop Stranraer - Employment Oppertunities

The Refuse shop  have two employment opportunities to  recruit Staff to join their team,  The posts are  funded  through  Aspiring Communities Fund and European social fund 






Store Supervisor


Up to £9,282.00 plus Pension, 21 hours per week (18 month contract)


An enthusiastic and highly motivated shop supervisor is needed to co-ordinate and develop the Project.  You should have excellent communication skills and be able to engage with the local community in both formal and informal settings.


You should have experience of staff supervision, training, shop floor operations and good financial management.  You will be responsible for volunteers in the shop and the shop floor.  You should have strong people skills and a working knowledge of how to lay out the shop to best effect.




Warehouse Assistant


£8,550.36 plus Pension, 21 hours per week (18 month contract)


The successful applicant will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination of goods in and out of our warehouse, van and showroom at the centre and will work alongside other staff to assist volunteers to engage in the service.


You should be able to work with minimum supervision and have the ability to deal with members of the public in a friendly and efficient manner and provide a level of support and guidance to volunteers whom you will have a level of responsibility for.

Reuse Centre Stranraer - Want your old Bycycles !

 Building Healthy Communities and Stranraer Reuse Centre are looking for any old bicycles that Family's are wishing to get rid of, for a new community environmental  project been established called "Recycle Cycle Project"






So if you have any bicycles that the children have out grown or have a bike that is broken and of no use, Stranraer Reuse centre would like to hear from you , Reuse staff will be happy to collect the bicycle from your home, or you can just drop it off at the Reuse shop on stranraer industrial site in stranraer

Cancer Voices hold their first Regional Meeting for 2018

Cancer Voices held their first regional meeting of the year at the Selkirk Arms Hotel ,Kirkcudbright on Wednesday 10th of January , Representatives from both Eat and West Cancer Voices attended the meeting , A productive meeting was had , with Penny Halliday  ( D&G cancer voice member welcoming everyone and explaining the reason for the change of name of the group from" User Involvement Group" ( UIG )  to " Cancer Voices" , which gave more clarity to its identity and thanked Macmillan cancer for their support in this process .
 Angela Macmillan ( D&G cancer voices member ) presented to the forum the achievements of the group in 2017  these included
  •  Setting up of the two East and West Cancer Voice forums in D&G
  • Development of its action plans
  • Connecting to local community Cancer groups and organisations
  • Engagement meetings with the Chief Exec Jeff Ace
  • Members attending the TCAT National Conference
  • Highlighting the need for a lymnpadema Nurse for D&G ( now instated )
  • Our promotional Marketing leaflets highlighting the various Cancer support projects across D&G
  • Visit by members to the Haven Centre to develop awareness and opportunity in sharing best practice
  • The members supporting   the Oyster Festival ,where 1500 Calendars developed by the forum which highlighted the  BHC MacMillan / TCAT projects programme in the area were provided to the public  
  • Grant fund raising to support the groups




Cancer Voices  Regional Meeting



Simon Malzer , Macmillan TCAT user involvement Manager provided a presentation on the work of the Cancer Experience Panel ( CEP)  and the work of TCAT  across the region and in Scotland ,highlighting some of the experiences and  lesion's learned for future planning

Joan Pollard , Associate Director of Allied Health Professions ,reflected on the visit to the Haven Centre with members of the forum last year , with regard to the model of care been provided by the centre which were fantastic ,  and opportunity`s to be looked at in developing the model here in D&G

Fiona Glasgow and Celia Hughes  both provided personal experiences  of family loss and the impacts this had on their children, and their experience, with lack of support available for bereaved children and young adults here in D&G 

Dawn Allen, NHS D&G Spiritual Care Lead  opened the discussion around support for young children / young adults whose parents have been diagnosed with life limiting illness or are bereaved  ,highlighting some of the support that is available and opened a discussion with the forum on looking on how services could be improved .

Penny Halliday  concluded the meeting Thanking everyone who has supported the Forum in the last year in getting it to where it is today, Challenges were still ahead ,and the forum will continue to listen to its community by being  that link for community groups and individuals  as a voice to be heard, and will continue to support our NHS and partners to improve the quality of services for those experiencing cancer

Building Healthy Communities ( Wet Wigtownshire ) Tai Chi for Health, Welcome the start of a new season

Greetings from Tai Chi for Health Stranraer,  It was pleasing to see a good turn out on our first day back after the festive season
The session started with a warm up of   Qigong provided by our facilitator  Jane Newland


This was followed by a session of Tai Chi for arthritis  and a session of Tai Chi for Diabetes delivered by James Ramsey and Robert Scott Hogg  our Tai Chi Facilitators






The day finished with a cup of tea and biscuit and how the festive season was spent by everyone


Our Lochans  Tai Chi for Health group  commence back on Wed at the lochans Community hall 11am - 1pm and we welcome any new service users to come along and join in and find out more on what is on offer
