Update of Move More and TCAT programme initiatives in West Wigtownshire

The Stranraer section of Macmillan Cancer Support and Building Healthy Communities -Move More and T.C.A.T (Transforming Care After Treatment) are continuing to develop their healthy walking sessions.  Following on from a very enjoyable walk around Gala Hill which took in great views of the town and loch, last weeks walk took place at Ringdoo point.  Walk Leader Peter Ross, formerly of the Forest Commission explained and identified many of the trees and plants to everybody.  Everybody enjoyed good exercise and fun afternoon which concluded with coffee at The Cancer Drop In Centre and the usual excellent service from the centre's volunteers and staff. This weeks walk will as usual meet at The Cancer Drop In Centre at 1 p.m.. Walks usually take no longer than 90 mins.  All people affected by cancer, families and carers are very welcome to join us.

Monday 6th March will see some new activity.  Our new Tai Chi for Beginners Course, which is aimed at people affected by cancer will start in the downstairs studio of Stranraer Library. The session will last one hour and include light refreshments and time for a chat at the end.  This session starts at 6 p.m. and should help cater for requests from people who are not available through the day to get involved in our healthy activities.  In addition, The Bosom Buddies Group which has operated in the town in the past will reform with it's initial meeting at the NHS Locality Office at Galloway Community Hospital at 2 p.m. on the same day.  This meeting will last around an hour and will include a brief talk from a member of Macmillan's national team and an update on the Move More and T.C.A.T projects from the Project Development Officer, Gary Small. Otherwise, the activity will include discussions on how to progress this social/activity group set up by cancer survivors.  The organisers are keen to invite anybody affected by cancer in any way, female or
male to join them and help establish this group.

Our swimming sessions are continuing to develop well. Organiser Evelyn Lithgow would be delighted to have some new people join the sessions which take place at the Ryan Centre Pool at 2 p.m. every Tuesday.  Gentle Movement sessions are continuing to attract a good number of participants every Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Stranraer Library. Christine Nicholson and Evelyn Lithgow who lead this particular group would be delighted to welcome new people who would like to take part in this form of gentle exercise created by Macmillan Cancer Support

Group Reiki initiative commences March 2017 at Waverly Health Centre Stranraer

Building Healthy Communities   West Wigtownshire are pleased to announce the commencement of their Reiki programme for 2017
BHC Trained Volunteers in Reiki will be offering group Reiki sessions at the Waverly Heath Centre Stranraer

WHAT IS REIKI? -  Reiki” (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy, and is also a word used to describe a system of natural healing, This tradition was founded by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication.

We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us, and we experience a sense of well being.

There are many variations of Reiki, but in essence Reiki treatments can help the body emotionally or spiritually. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system.

Reiki treatment is a process that anyone can enjoy in the normal course of their life. Reiki can be used alongside other conventional or complementary treatment and often helps to provide emotional support during recovery.

The method of receiving Reiki is simple. The recipient remains clothed and lies on a couch or sits on a chair and relaxes. The practitioner gently places their hands in a series of non-intrusive positions on or near the body. There is no massage or manipulation. The whole person is treated rather than specific areas. Sessions can take 45 minutes to an hour-and-a-half, depending on the client’s needs.

Dates and times of the group will be published soon
